The New York Yankees dropped their third straight game Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Gerrit Cole struggled early against his longtime division rival, and New York’s offense was held to just three hits as the Yankees fell to 48-34 while Boston improved to 35-46.
Boston wasted little time taking control. Cole surrendered two home runs over the first three innings, including the first career homer by former Yankees prospect Anthony Seigler, before Willson Contreras added a two-run double to build a 4-0 advantage. Cole settled down after the rocky start, tossing three scoreless frames before exiting with one out in the sixth. The veteran allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk over 5.1 innings, while Brent Headrick escaped a jam to keep the deficit at four.
The Yankees had no answer for Boston starter Jake Bennett, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Max Schuemann finally broke through with a solo homer to straightaway center for his first home run of the season, accounting for New York’s only run.
The Yankees mounted their best threat in the seventh after back-to-back singles by Amed Rosario and Cody Bellinger put two aboard with nobody out. Bennett and reliever Justin Slaten responded by striking out the next three hitters, ending the rally before it could gain momentum.
New York finished with only three hits and three walks while scoring just five total runs through the first three games of the series.
The Yankees wrap up their four-game series against the Red Sox on Sunday Night Baseball at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. Carlos Rodón is expected to start for New York against former Yankees right-hander Sonny Gray.
