The New York Yankees fell 6-3 to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at Fenway Park as four costly errors led to all six Boston runs being unearned. The loss dropped New York to 48-32, while the Red Sox improved to 33-46 despite being held without an earned run against Yankees pitching.
New York struck first when Jasson DomÃnguez delivered a two-out RBI single in the opening inning after Paul Goldschmidt doubled to lead off the game. Jose Caballero added a solo homer over the Green Monster in the fourth before Goldschmidt’s RBI groundout in the seventh trimmed Boston’s lead to 4-3.
Cam Schlittler turned in another impressive outing despite the defeat. The rookie right-hander struck out nine over five innings, allowing four unearned runs on five hits and two walks. Defensive miscues repeatedly extended innings, including Schlittler’s throwing error, a missed pop-up, and a costly fifth-inning error by Amed Rosario that helped Boston erase an early deficit before Caleb Durbin’s two-run homer put the Red Sox in front.
The Yankees’ defense unraveled again in the eighth. Yerry De los Santos bobbled a bunt to load the bases before Ryan Yarbrough hit a batter to force home a run. Moments later, Anthony Volpe’s errant throw on a potential inning-ending double play allowed another run to score, stretching Boston’s lead to 6-3.
New York threatened in the ninth by loading the bases with two outs against Aroldis Chapman, but Ben Rice grounded out to end the comeback bid.
The Yankees continue their four-game series against the Red Sox on Friday at Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Will Warren (7-2, 3.45 ERA) is expected to start for New York against Payton Tolle (3-5, 3.08 ERA).
