Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered, drove in two runs and scored twice as the New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. The win improved the Yankees to 47-31 and snapped a three-game losing streak, while Detroit fell to 34-45 and had its four-game win streak halted.
Detroit struck first with two runs in the third inning before New York answered in the fourth. Jose Caballero brought home Chisholm on a groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1, and Cody Bellinger later threw out a runner at the plate to keep the game within reach.
The Yankees broke through in the sixth inning. Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single before Chisholm crushed a two-run home run to right-center. After Caballero added a two-out single, Austin Wells followed with a double in his return from the injured list to extend the lead to 4-2. Detroit answered quickly with a run in the bottom half, but New York’s bullpen held from there.
Carlos Rodón earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings, while three relievers bridged the gap to closer David Bednar, who recorded the final four outs for his 15th save. Casey Mize took the loss for Detroit after allowing four runs over 5.2 innings.
Chisholm finished as the clear spark for New York, also scoring twice and driving the offense in a game where the Yankees went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position but did enough damage to secure the victory.
The Yankees conclude the three-game series against the Tigers on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with Ryan Weathers set to start for New York against Tarik Skubal for Detroit.
