Honda is initiating a major safety recall of more than 880,000 vehicles in U.S. states that use road salt in the winter, such as New York and other “salt belt” areas. It’s a recall because there’s a serious problem with corrosion on the rear subframe. Rust can gradually damage this part of the vehicle. In the worst cases it could be so bad that the rear suspension could pop off the vehicle, which could cause you to lose control and crash.
Which vehicles are affected?
The recall includes several popular Honda and Acura models, especially popular in snow-prone areas. The affected vehicles are:
- Honda Pilot (2016-2022)
- Honda Ridgeline (2017-2022)
- Honda Passport (2019-2023)
- Acura MDX (2014-2020)
These models are more susceptible, since road salt used during the winter months can slowly rust the underbody of the vehicle. Damage builds up over time, and is worse in cold, wet weather.
What the Problem Really Means
The issue is the rear subframe, which is a vital piece of metal that supports the rear suspension of the vehicle. Over time, salt, water and snow can be left on the part and cause rusting. If the rust is deep enough it can weaken the structure. This could cause suspension components to come loose or break while driving which is a major safety concern.
What Honda Will Do
Honda dealers will inspect the rear subframe on all affected vehicles. If the rust is light, they will put a reinforcement kit on to strengthen the part. If the damage is severe enough, they will replace the whole subframe and associated suspension parts. All inspections and repairs will be free of charge.
What should owners do?
Owners don’t need to wait for the recall letter, which will start to go out around July 7, 2026. They should instead immediately check their vehicle with the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
You can also enter the VIN on the official recall website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under recall number 26V-367-000. This will tell you whether your vehicle is affected.
You can reach Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 for assistance and to schedule repairs.
Final Thought
This recall serves as a reminder of the slow erosion that salt can cause to important vehicle components. So if you own one of the affected models, then you should check your VIN and get the inspection done ASAP to stay safe on the road.
