Lake erosion claims historic Sodus Beechwood chimney

A century-old chimney at Beechwood State Park has collapsed into Lake Ontario after years of shoreline erosion, according to News10NBC. The structure was the last remaining piece of a building that served as a Girl Scout camp in the 1920s.

Park officials say erosion has dramatically reshaped the shoreline. Caretaker Sal Vittozzi said the park has lost about 80 feet of bluff over the past eight years, while dozens of trees have fallen into the lake in recent months.

The collapse has raised new concerns about other park facilities, including a pavilion built in 2022 that now sits closer to the eroding cliff edge. Vittozzi plans to salvage bricks from the fallen chimney and use them in new firepits at the park.
