The New York Yankees (44-27) backed Gerrit Cole with a relentless offensive performance Tuesday night, collecting 16 hits in a 12-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox (38-33) at Yankee Stadium. Every Yankees starter recorded at least one hit as New York scored 10 runs across the third and fourth innings to turn a close game into a rout.
Chicago struck first when Andrew Benintendi launched a solo homer in the opening inning, but Cole quickly regained control. The veteran right-hander retired 13 consecutive batters during one stretch and finished with six innings of three-hit ball, allowing two runs while striking out six.
The Yankees answered in the second on Spencer Jones’ towering solo homer before taking command an inning later. After loading the bases, Cody Bellinger lined a two-run single, Jones drew a bases-loaded walk and José Caballero added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
Ben Rice blasted a two-run homer to open a six-run fourth, Paul Goldschmidt followed with a two-run shot of his own and Ryan McMahon chipped in an RBI single as the Yankees chased White Sox starter Davis Martin from the game. Caballero added a solo blast in the eighth to cap the scoring.
The Yankees continue their three-game series against Chicago on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Carlos Rodón is expected to start for New York against Anthony Kay.
