Maryland woman charged with DWI after Penn Yan incident

A traffic stop in Penn Yan early Sunday led to the arrest of a Maryland woman on driving while intoxicated and traffic-related charges, according to police.

Courtney Q. Vu, 22, of Rockville, Maryland, was arrested June 14 after Penn Yan police observed a vehicle traveling on Elm Street at night without functioning headlights or taillights.

Police said they identified Vu during the stop and learned through a Department of Motor Vehicles check that she was no longer licensed to drive in Virginia.

According to investigators, Vu displayed several signs of intoxication and officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. She was administered standardized field sobriety tests, which police said she failed.

Vu was taken into custody and transported to the Yates County Jail, where she refused a chemical breath test. She was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operator, inadequate headlights and inadequate taillights. Vu was returned to the Yates County Jail and held pending centralized arraignment.
