Ithaca targets vacant buildings

Empty buildings could soon become expensive in Ithaca, according to The Ithaca Voice. City leaders signaled support for a proposal that would require owners to register vacant properties and pay escalating fees if they sit unused for years.

The plan would fine owners of small residential buildings $250 in the first year of vacancy and up to $1,000 by year three. Commercial properties could face even steeper penalties, starting at $1,000 or a square-footage-based fee, with additional fines for failing to register or cooperate with inspections.

City officials say the proposal addresses fire hazards, public safety concerns, and economic development challenges tied to abandoned properties. If approved, the registry and fee schedule could take effect as early as Aug. 1.
