Lake Ontario erodes Beechwood shoreline

Lake Ontario has swallowed nearly 80 feet of shoreline at Beechwood State Park over the past three decades, according to the Times of Wayne County. The ongoing erosion has claimed trees, soil and portions of structures at the nearly 300-acre park along the lake.

Park caretaker Sal Vittozzi said the erosion has accelerated in recent years, driven by saturated soil, waves and wind. He estimates about 30 trees have been lost in just the last two and a half months, and said the bluff continues creeping closer to park buildings.

Officials say there are few options to stop the natural process. The town plans to add fencing and warning signs, while urging visitors and campers to stay away from unstable cliff areas. Despite the erosion, Beechwood State Park remains open to the public.
