Ithaca schools adopt climate plan

After two years of debate and revisions, the Ithaca City School District has approved its first-ever climate action plan, according to The Ithaca Voice. School board members unanimously backed the plan, which aims to reduce emissions, improve sustainability, and incorporate climate-related goals into district operations and classrooms.

The final version scaled back some of the original proposal’s more specific mandates, removing target dates and detailed action items while preserving broader environmental goals. District leaders said the changes created a more flexible framework that can guide future decisions without locking the district into costly commitments.

Several ambitious objectives remain, including a goal of electrifying the district’s bus fleet by 2035, reducing landfill waste, expanding sustainability education, and tracking energy use and emissions. An advisory council of students, teachers, and administrators will oversee implementation and monitor progress moving forward.
