The New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians with an 8-4 victory Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field. Powered by a balanced 11-hit attack, three RBI from Jazz Chisholm Jr. and another strong outing from Carlos Rodón, New York continued its recent surge while improving to 41-26. Cleveland fell to 37-33.
Chisholm helped spark the offense early, delivering a two-run triple in the second inning to put the Yankees in front. He finished with three RBI and scored twice, continuing his productive stretch at the plate. Trent Grisham also played a major role, collecting two hits, scoring three runs and igniting a decisive sixth-inning rally.
With the game tied 3-3 in the sixth, Grisham turned a reversed strikeout call into a one-out triple and later scored on Jose Caballero’s sacrifice fly to give New York the lead for good. Anthony Volpe followed with an RBI double before Paul Goldschmidt added another run-scoring hit to cap a three-run frame and create separation.
Volpe overcame an earlier throwing error that allowed José RamÃrez to reach second base in the third inning. The mistake proved harmless, and the young shortstop responded with a key extra-base hit when the Yankees needed it most.
Rodón settled in after surrendering a leadoff home run to Angel MartÃnez. The left-hander completed six innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out seven and earning his latest quality start.
The Yankees are off Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in Toronto. First pitch is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. New York has not yet announced a starting pitcher.
