A rescue truck that once answered emergency calls in Palmyra is still serving the public hundreds of miles away, continuing a firefighting legacy that spans decades and two states.
The Palmyra Fire Department recently highlighted the history of one of its former rescue vehicles, which now serves with the Ellis Grove Fire Department in Illinois. According to the department, the truck was sold when Ellis Grove officials saw an opportunity to keep the apparatus in service rather than retire it.
After purchasing the vehicle, members of the Ellis Grove Fire Department refurbished the rescue truck, updated its lettering and returned it to active duty.
Today, the apparatus continues responding to emergencies while carrying critical rescue equipment used by firefighters at a variety of incidents.
Palmyra firefighters said the truck represents more than just a piece of equipment. The vehicle serves as a reminder of the traditions and shared mission that connect fire departments across generations and communities.
While the department name on the side of the truck has changed, officials noted that its purpose remains the same: protecting residents and supporting firefighters when emergencies occur.
The Palmyra Fire Department said it is proud to see the apparatus continue its service life and carry forward a legacy that began in Wayne County and now continues in Illinois.
