Engineers told county supervisors this week that communities may need a local or regional biosolids processing facility as state regulators consider tighter rules on sludge use because of PFAS contamination concerns. Options range from composting and drying sludge to newer technologies like gasification and pyrolysis.

A feasibility study found smaller facilities would likely lose money, while a larger regional operation could be financially viable. Engineers said uncertainty around future PFAS regulations and emerging treatment technologies means there’s no immediate need for the county to move forward with construction.
