Onondaga schools names next superintendent

The Onondaga Central School District has selected a neighboring school administrator to become its next superintendent after a five-month search process that included community input and stakeholder interviews.

Robert S. Montgomery, currently assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction, data and assessment in the Marcellus Central School District, will succeed Superintendent Rob Price, who is retiring July 10 after leading the district for 13 years.

Board of Education President Mike Kobasa said the district received strong community engagement throughout the search and expressed confidence in Montgomery’s ability to lead the district. The board conducted a national search with assistance from Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES and gathered feedback from residents and stakeholder groups to help identify desired leadership qualities.

Montgomery has served in his current district-level role since July 2024. Before that, he spent seven years as principal of K.C. Heffernan Elementary School in Marcellus and previously worked as a teacher, instructional coach, curriculum director and elementary school principal in Central New York.

As superintendent, Montgomery will lead a district serving about 740 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade and employing approximately 185 instructional, noninstructional and administrative staff members. He called his selection an honor and said he looks forward to building on the district’s strong sense of community and family.
