A major route honoring Harriet Tubman’s journey to freedom could soon stretch across Upstate New York, according to The Citizen. State lawmakers approved the first phase of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, creating a path from Auburn to Niagara Falls.
The proposed byway would link 65 municipalities in eight counties, including Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Monroe. Supporters believe the route could attract new visitors while preserving the history of Tubman and other freedom seekers.
The legislation now awaits Gov. Kathy Hochul’s signature. Organizers also plan a second phase that would extend the byway through Syracuse, Utica and Albany before reaching New York City.
