A 59-year-old man was killed Friday morning in a head-on collision involving a dump truck on State Route 54 in the town of Torrey, according to New York State Police.
Troopers said the crash happened around 11:39 a.m. when an eastbound 1999 Sterling dump truck driven by a 38-year-old Penn Yan man braked suddenly after encountering a vehicle ahead that was attempting to make a left turn. The dump truck then crossed into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming 2015 Chevrolet Silverado.
Police said the Silverado’s driver, who was the vehicle’s sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
The dump truck driver was ejected from the vehicle and transported to Geneva General Hospital before being flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Investigators said he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A preliminary breath test administered to the driver produced negative results.
Members of the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to assist with the investigation. The roadway has since reopened, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
