The Seneca Falls Police Department is mourning the loss of retired Sgt. Dean E. Zettlemoyer, a longtime officer who spent more than a quarter-century serving the community before retiring in 2010.
Zettlemoyer died May 31 at age 59, according to his obituary. A Waterloo native and 1985 graduate of Waterloo High School, he dedicated 26 years to the Seneca Falls Police Department, rising to the rank of sergeant during a career marked by public service and leadership.
In a statement, the department said Zettlemoyer exemplified professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the community throughout his career. Officials also highlighted a memorable moment when he pinned the badge on his son, Officer Colin Zettlemoyer, during his police academy graduation, continuing a family tradition of service.
Beyond law enforcement, family members remembered Zettlemoyer as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend known for his sense of humor and love of family. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, five children, three grandchildren, his mother, brother, and several extended family members.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Vince’s Park in Seneca Falls. The family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Seneca Falls Police Department Police Benevolent Association in his honor.
