Author Sue Fliess shares STEAM lessons with Waterloo students

Students at Skoi-Yase Primary School got a firsthand look at how science, creativity, and storytelling can work together when children’s author Sue Fliess visited Waterloo in May.

Fliess, who has written more than 50 children’s books focused on science, technology, engineering, art, and math, met with students on May 19 to discuss her work and explain how STEAM concepts influence her writing. During her visit, she read from her book “Cicada Symphony,” which explores the anatomy and life cycle of cicadas.

Fliess told students that problem-solving is at the heart of both STEAM education and writing. She explained that even her fictional stories are grounded in real science and encouraged students to pursue topics they are passionate about, regardless of how unusual they may seem.

The visit followed a school-wide insect study that involved collaboration among Skoi-Yase’s art, library, and STEAM lab programs. Students participated in nature observations, research projects, insect-themed artwork, and 3D insect design and printing activities with support from the school’s IT coordinator, Toby Coleman.

Jean Ritter-Gaylord, a teacher specializing in visual arts and STEAM education, coordinated the event and connected it to learning activities taking place throughout the school year. She said the visit helped demonstrate how creativity, science, and problem-solving can come together in meaningful ways. Fliess concluded her visit by signing copies of her books for students to take home.
