USDA highlights rural homeownership programs during national campaign

Federal officials are using National Homeownership Month to spotlight programs aimed at helping more rural residents buy, build and repair homes across New York.

USDA Rural Development New York State Director Richard Mayfield announced the initiative Tuesday, saying the agency is focused on expanding access to affordable housing and supporting first-time homebuyers in rural communities. The effort is part of a nationwide campaign highlighting federal housing resources available through USDA Rural Development.

Officials said homeownership remains one of the most effective ways for families to build wealth and long-term financial stability. Throughout June, USDA plans to promote programs that help rural residents purchase homes, finance construction projects and make critical repairs to existing properties.

Among the programs being highlighted are the Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program, which partners with private lenders to help eligible buyers secure financing; the Single Family Housing Direct Home Loan Program; the Home Repair Loan and Grant Program; and the Mutual Self-Help Housing Grant Program, which supports local housing construction efforts through nonprofit organizations.

USDA officials said the agency will also host events and roundtable discussions across New York during the month to connect residents with available housing resources. The agency said its broader rural development efforts include investments in infrastructure, community facilities and local economic development projects designed to support long-term growth in rural communities.
