A fast-moving fire destroyed a home on Dewey Road in the Town of Manchester on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a large emergency response and the closure of a section of the roadway for several hours.
Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from multiple departments were dispatched to 3777 Dewey Road around 4:43 p.m. for a reported residential structure fire. By the time crews brought the blaze under control, the home had been deemed a total loss.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was contained to the residence and later extinguished. All occupants were able to escape the home without injury. The blaze spread quickly, essentially burning the structure to the ground.
Dewey Road was closed between County Road 7 and North Avenue from the start of the incident and remained closed into the evening as emergency crews continued working at the scene. Fire departments from Hopewell, Manchester, Shortsville, Clifton Springs, Pumpkin Hook, Seneca Castle, Oaks Corners, Phelps, Port Gibson, Northside, Victor, Fairville and Marion responded, along with Ontario County fire investigators, Mercy Flight EMS Ambulance, Town of Manchester Code Enforcement and RG&E.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced family. Authorities said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ontario County Fire Coordinators Office.
