New York lawmakers could vote this week on a proposal that would pause new data center construction for one year, according to Spectrum News 1. The measure would give the state time to study environmental impacts while establishing labor and renewable energy standards for future projects.
Legislative leaders say they are comfortable moving the bill forward before the session ends. Gov. Kathy Hochul has signaled interest in ensuring communities benefit from data center projects and avoid strains on local power systems.
Economic development officials and industry groups warn the moratorium could jeopardize major projects, jobs, and tax revenue. In Genesee County alone, opponents say a proposed data center project could generate nearly $500 million in local revenue over 30 years.
