Auburn City Council to consider tax cap override tonight: What else is on the agenda?

The Auburn City Council will meet tonight with a relatively light agenda that includes a proposed override of the state’s property tax cap, an agreement for a youth conservation camp program, several board appointments, and acceptance of a grant for local tennis programming.

The most significant item on the agenda is a public hearing and vote on Local Law No. 1 of 2026, which would authorize the city to override New York’s tax levy limit for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The measure does not automatically raise taxes above the cap, but preserves the council’s ability to do so if necessary during the budget process. Tax cap override laws have become routine across New York as municipalities seek flexibility while developing annual budgets.

Council members will also consider an intermunicipal agreement with Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES to continue the Auburn Conservation Corps Summer Camp, a program that provides local youth with environmental education and hands-on conservation activities. The agreement would formalize the city’s participation in the 2026 program.

Several appointments are scheduled for consideration, including reappointments and new appointments to the Civil Service Commission and Board of Assessment Review. Council will also consider appointing a city representative to the Owasco Lake Watershed Management Council and Watershed Inspection Committee, a role that helps coordinate watershed protection efforts affecting the city’s drinking water supply.

Another item on the agenda would authorize the city to accept grant funding from the U.S. Tennis Association. While supporting documents indicate the grant is tied to local tennis programming, details of the funding package are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at Memorial City Hall. Prior to the business session, Mayor James Giannettino Jr. is scheduled to issue a proclamation recognizing June 6 as D-Day National Remembrance Day and 299th Combat Engineer Battalion Day, honoring Auburn-area soldiers who participated in the Normandy invasion during World War II.

The council will also receive a city manager’s report, hear public comment, and address any additional business before adjournment.
