Behind another strong outing from Christian Scott and a pair of home runs, the New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. The victory was New York’s third straight and improved its record to 25-33, while Miami fell to 26-33.
Scott continued his recent success against the Marlins, allowing one run on five hits across five innings while matching a season high with eight strikeouts. The right-hander generated consistent swing-and-miss stuff throughout the afternoon and earned the first win of his major league career after 16 starts.
The Mets broke through in the fourth inning with a three-run rally. After Juan Soto extended his on-base streak to 14 games with a walk, Jared Young helped set the table before Mark Vientos lined a two-run double. Marcus Semien followed later in the inning with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Miami’s lone run came in the fifth, but New York quickly regained momentum thanks to its defense. A.J. Ewing preserved the lead with a running catch in deep center field to end the inning, while Carson Benge also made a standout grab near the warning track earlier in the game.
Young added insurance with a leadoff homer in the sixth inning, and Hayden Senger capped the scoring an inning later by launching the first home run of his major league career. The Mets finished with 10 hits, while the bullpen combined for four scoreless innings. Huascar Brazobán struck out the side in the seventh, and Devin Williams closed the door with a perfect ninth.
The Mets will look to complete a three-game sweep Sunday at Citi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. Nolan McLean (2-4, 4.40 ERA) is expected to start for New York against Miami right-hander Janson Junk (3-5, 4.80 ERA).
