Cayuga County 911 is recruiting new emergency dispatchers as county officials continue efforts to strengthen staffing inside the county’s emergency communications center.
A new public hiring campaign highlights the critical role dispatchers play as the first point of contact during emergencies involving police, fire and EMS response.
The recruitment effort emphasizes both the public service and career development aspects of the position, describing dispatchers as “the calm in their emergency” and “the first voice in an emergency and the calm in the chaos.”
County officials say dispatchers help coordinate police, fire and ambulance responses while working in a team-focused environment with opportunities for training and advancement.
The campaign also notes the position may qualify under New York’s HELP Program, meaning applicants could potentially be hired without a traditional civil service examination depending on final state classification approval.
The hiring push comes as emergency communications centers across New York and the country continue facing recruitment and retention challenges tied to high-stress workloads, staffing shortages and growing call volumes.
County leaders have increasingly discussed the importance of maintaining stable 911 staffing levels as emergency communications systems become more technologically complex and central to public safety operations.
