For more than two decades, Denis Oliver became a familiar name for veterans across Steuben County seeking help navigating benefits, health care, housing, or simply understanding where to turn next. This week, that lifetime of service earned statewide recognition in Albany.
State Sen. Tom O’Mara inducted Oliver into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame during a ceremony Tuesday at the Legislative Office Building, honoring his military service and years of advocacy for veterans and their families throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region.
Oliver, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former Steuben County Veterans’ Service Agency officer, represented O’Mara’s 58th Senate District as part of this year’s Hall of Fame class, which included roughly 60 veterans from across New York.
O’Mara praised Oliver for dedicating much of his post-military career to ensuring veterans received the benefits and services they earned through military service.
“Denis has offered an unwavering commitment to the critical work of ensuring that veterans and their families receive the programs and services they deserve, need, and have earned,” O’Mara said in a statement. “He is well known and respected for always being there for our veterans and for always going above and beyond to provide assistance.”
Oliver enlisted in the Air Force after graduating high school in Michigan in 1981. He served until 1985 as an aircraft armaments systems specialist stationed in Germany and Maine, reaching the rank of senior airman and earning several military honors, including the Air Force Achievement Medal.
After settling in Steuben County, Oliver joined the county Veterans’ Service Agency in 2004, where he became known for helping veterans navigate education, employment, financial aid, health care, housing, vocational rehabilitation and other government services.
From 2019 until retiring in 2024, Oliver worked as a veterans services advisor for the New York State Department of Veterans Services.
Randy Metz, a fellow Air Force veteran from Bath who nominated Oliver for the honor, described him as a trusted resource and advocate for veterans throughout the region.
“He never says no and is recognized as the authority for all veteran issues and questions,” Metz said. “He always goes well above to take care of all people.”
Oliver’s service also extended into numerous veterans organizations and community initiatives. He previously served as president of the County Veterans Service Officers Association of New York State and received the Theodore S. Coleman Memorial Service Officer of the Year award from the American Legion Department of New York in 2011.
He has also worked with the American Legion, New York State Elks Association, Bath VA Museum and the Wreaths Across America planning committee at Bath National Cemetery.
The New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to recognize veterans for both military and civilian accomplishments. More than 1,000 veterans from across the state have been inducted since the program began.
