Milo advances farmland seizure over development fight

A packed and tense Milo Town Board meeting ended with officials voting to pursue eminent domain against a 72-acre property tied to a long-running development fight, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

The board unanimously approved moving forward with acquiring farmland at 2442 Old Route 14A from the Yates County IDA, arguing the move protects prime farmland under the town’s comprehensive plan. Residents clashed over the decision, with critics warning taxpayers could face millions in legal costs while supporters accused the IDA of overreach.

The dispute traces back to Milo’s rejection of a proposal to annex the land into Penn Yan for future development. Legal battles between the town, village and IDA have already stretched more than a year and cost Milo at least $91,000.
