A Penn Yan engineer and farmer is jumping into one of the Finger Lakes’ quietest Senate races, according to the Finger Lakes Times, giving state Sen. Tom O’Mara his first Democratic challenger in years.
Jim Bobreski, who works in nuclear power and owns a farm, said rising costs, energy policy, immigration, and healthcare pushed him to run in the 58th District race. O’Mara hasn’t faced a Democratic opponent since 2020.
Bobreski criticized Republican-backed spending cuts and called for more investment in battery research, STEM education, and preventive healthcare. He also wants a public debate with O’Mara ahead of the November election. The district includes Seneca and Yates counties.
