Police in Cayuga Heights are investigating what authorities described as a homicide after a death reported Saturday led to a suspect being taken into custody.
According to a media release issued by the Cayuga Heights Police Department, the investigation began May 23 and is being treated as a murder case. Officials said the lone suspect is already in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The department did not release the identity of the victim or suspect Saturday, and no additional details about the circumstances surrounding the death were immediately made public.
Police said the investigation remains active.
Authorities said the Cayuga Heights Police Department is being assisted by the New York State Police, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Cayuga Heights Fire Department, and Bangs Ambulance.
Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne issued a public statement extending condolences to those affected by what he described as a “tragic incident” in the village.
“The Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident in the Village of Cayuga Heights,” Osborne wrote in a statement posted online Saturday. “Incidences of this nature deeply affect the entire community.”
Osborne also expressed support for Cayuga Heights police officers involved in the investigation, calling it a “difficult and important” case.
No charges had been publicly announced as of Saturday afternoon.
