New York issues summer safety warning ahead of Memorial Day weekend

New York officials are urging residents to take precautions heading into Memorial Day weekend as warmer temperatures, outdoor gatherings and summer activities ramp up across the state.

The state Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection released a broad set of seasonal safety reminders Friday covering everything from heat exposure and grill fires to playground injuries, tick bites and boating and swimming safety.

State officials warned parents never to leave children or pets inside vehicles during warm weather, noting temperatures inside cars can become deadly even when outdoor temperatures are relatively mild. The state also encouraged residents to monitor weather conditions, stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.

The guidance also focused heavily on child safety heading into the summer season. Officials encouraged parents to supervise children around pools, lakes and beaches, inspect playground equipment for hazards and follow all posted restrictions at amusement parks and fairs.

With cookouts and outdoor gatherings expected throughout the holiday weekend, the state also reminded residents to use grills only in well-ventilated outdoor areas and to keep children away from heat sources including campfires, grills and fire pits.

Health and safety officials also highlighted concerns about ticks and mosquito activity this summer, encouraging residents to cover exposed skin during peak bug activity hours and take extra precautions against tick bites.

The state additionally released reminders about safe use of power tools, chainsaws and lawn equipment as homeowners begin seasonal outdoor work.

Secretary of State Walter Mosley said Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer activities across New York and urged residents to follow simple safety measures to avoid preventable injuries and emergencies during the warmer months.
