The Humane Society of Schuyler County has entered into new agreements with the towns of Ovid and Covert to provide shelter services for stray dogs found running at large.
Under the agreements, stray dogs picked up in the two towns will be transported to the Humane Society for care and temporary housing while efforts are made to locate their owners.
The organization said dogs will be held for five days in coordination with Dog Control Officer April Moore while staff work to reunite the animals with their families whenever possible.
Any dog not claimed within the five-day holding period will become property of the Humane Society and may be made available for adoption, according to the agreements, which remain in effect through Dec. 31, 2026.
Officials also reminded residents that New York law requires all animals leaving the shelter to have a current rabies vaccination and valid license. If owners cannot provide proof of vaccination, the Humane Society said arrangements will be made for vaccination at the owner’s expense before the animal is released.
Residents in Ovid and Covert seeking assistance with stray dogs are being directed to contact Dog Control Officer April Moore.
The Humane Society also updated contact information for nearby municipalities. Residents in the Town of Lodi are asked to contact Dog Control Officer Ben Caulkins regarding stray dogs, while residents in the Town of Barton may contact either their local dog control officer or the Humane Society directly. In the Town of VanEtten, residents are advised to continue contacting Dog Control Officer Dustin Rose or the Humane Society for assistance.
