Skaneateles voters back library tax levy tied to new building project

Skaneateles voters approved a library tax levy that supporters say clears a major hurdle for construction of a new public library building on Fennell Street, advancing a long-debated project aimed at expanding community space and services.

Library officials said the approved levy will support development of a new facility at 75 Fennell St., which they described as a long-term investment in the future of the community.

“This vote was an important step, but it is not the final step,” Library Board President Dave Hempson said in a statement released after the vote. He said the library would continue working through the planning process to ensure the project moves forward responsibly.

Executive Director Andrea Snyder described the future library as a community gathering space designed to serve residents of all ages while providing educational and social opportunities beyond traditional library services.

The project has been the subject of ongoing discussion in Skaneateles as library leaders seek to modernize facilities and create additional public space for programming, meetings, and community events.
