The New York Yankees improved to 29-19 on Monday night with a 7-6 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium, using a four-run seventh inning and a go-ahead home run from Jazz Chisholm Jr. to snap a two-game skid. Toronto dropped to 21-26 after surrendering the lead late despite home runs from Ernie Clement and George Springer.
Paul Goldschmidt wasted no time setting the tone, launching a leadoff home run on the first pitch he saw from Patrick Corbin. Goldschmidt later added a game-tying RBI double in the fourth inning as the Yankees chipped away after falling behind 3-1.
Ryan Weathers showed flashes for New York but also allowed two costly homers. Clement’s three-run shot in the fourth erased the Yankees’ early lead, and Springer added a solo blast in the fifth to put Toronto back ahead 4-3. Weathers still struck out seven without issuing a walk across 5.1 innings.
The Yankees broke through in the seventh. Cody Bellinger crushed a two-run homer to give New York the lead before Chisholm followed later in the inning with a towering two-run blast that created needed separation at 7-4.
Anthony Volpe continued to heat up at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored after struggling in his first few games back with the club.
The series continues Tuesday at Yankee Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Will Warren (5-1, 3.42 ERA) is expected to start for New York against Toronto right-hander Dylan Cease (3-1, 2.41 ERA).
