Taylor saves Mets with ninth-inning blast, Benge delivers walk-off against Yankees

The New York Mets erased a four-run deficit and stunned the New York Yankees with a 7-6 extra-inning victory Sunday afternoon at Citi Field, salvaging the Subway Series finale. The Mets improved to 20-26 with the win, while the Yankees dropped to 28-19 after letting a late lead slip away.

Trailing 6-3 with two outs in the ninth, the Mets looked finished before Tyrone Taylor delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon. After Carson Benge singled and Juan Soto reached on a fielder’s choice, Taylor crushed a game-tying three-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole off David Bednar to force extra innings.

The Mets completed the comeback in the 10th. After Mark Vientos started a key 3-6-3 double play with runners on the corners in the top half, A.J. Ewing moved ghost runner Marcus Semien to third with a sacrifice bunt. Benge then chopped a ball up the middle that led to confusion between Yankees infielders, allowing Semien to score the winning run.

Freddy Peralta battled through a wild outing for the Mets, allowing just two hits across five innings but issuing six walks. Sean Manaea followed with four innings of relief, surrendering two runs while helping preserve the bullpen.

The Yankees capitalized on Mets mistakes during a four-run sixth inning despite recording only one hit. Anthony Volpe drove in two runs with a single, while a dropped popup in left allowed another run to score.

Ben Rice added his 15th home run of the season for New York, while Luis Torrens delivered a two-run double for the Mets during their comeback effort.
