Attiogbe shatters meet record as Cornell finishes fourth at Heps

The Cornell Big Red men’s track and field team battled through extreme heat Sunday at Princeton University, finishing fourth at the Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 65.5 points behind a record-breaking performance from junior Pierre Attiogbe and a dominant effort in the throwing events.

Competing in temperatures that climbed into the 90s, Cornell was led by Attiogbe, who delivered one of the top performances of the meet in the 1,500 meters. The junior surged to victory in 3:38.25, breaking the Heps meet record and giving the Big Red a signature championship moment.

Cornell also excelled in the shot put, where sophomore Peter Northrup earned runner-up honors with a personal-best throw of 18.45 meters. Northrup topped 18 meters on every measured attempt and was later named Men’s Field Performer of the Meet. Senior Noah Harman added a fourth-place finish with a personal-best mark of 18.00 meters, moving into fourth place in program history.

Senior Ryder King scored in both hurdle events, placing second in the 400-meter hurdles in 51.00 and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 13.96. Sophomore Jason Meza added a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best 51.59.

Freshman Edgar Thielens continued his standout season by placing fourth in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1:49.90, while Cornell’s 4×100 relay team earned sixth in a season-best 40.61.

Cornell now awaits selections for the NCAA East First Round, scheduled for May 27-28 in Lexington, Kentucky.
