Land fight drives up legal bills for Penn Yan and Milo

A bitter fight over 72 acres on Old Route 14A keeps dragging Penn Yan and Milo deeper into court, according to the Finger Lakes Times, while taxpayers question soaring legal costs.

The dispute started after Milo rejected Penn Yan’s 2025 annexation proposal for land owned by the Finger Lakes Economic Development Center. Two lawsuits now surround the project, including challenges over environmental reviews and the annexation denial itself. Milo residents recently pressed town leaders about legal spending after costs topped $91,000.

FLEDC CEO Steve Griffin said the agency offered a compromise that would annex only half the property and include Milo representatives in development planning. Griffin also claimed town officials planned to delay the process because it benefited Milo’s position. Meanwhile, Milo continues appealing a judge’s ruling that backed Penn Yan’s environmental review.
