Powerful waves and near-record Seneca Lake levels have battered Geneva’s Lakefront Park, and repairs could cost up to $4 million, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Public Works Director Joe Venuti told City Council the shoreline damage continues to worsen as flood-stage waters pound the area.
Venuti said heavy spring rain, more than 60 inches of winter snowfall and strong southerly winds triggered erosion, flooding and sinkholes along the waterfront. Some damage now threatens walking and biking paths near Seneca Lake State Park, and the city may close sections of sidewalk for safety.
Mayor Jim Cecere warned the repairs won’t come cheap, while city officials scramble to document damage for possible state or federal aid. Venuti said the situation has become so serious it’s “keeping me up at night.”
