Canandaigua opens first homeless shelter for struggling families

Ontario County’s first homeless shelter for families opened Friday inside a restored 1830s cobblestone home in Canandaigua, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Family Promise of Ontario County and the Molly and Ed Shill Cares Foundation launched the new Shill Family Center as homelessness continues to surge across the county.

County officials reported up to 25 families seek shelter each night, while more than 400 school-aged children experienced homelessness during the 2023-24 school year. The new shelter at 495 N. Main St. can house up to seven families, or 30 people, at a time.

Leaders said the center will offer case management, support services and housing assistance to help families regain stability. The property also includes a new playground for children.
