A Geneva student earned first place in the Seneca County Chamber Community Foundation’s inaugural Regional Civics Bee competition, with three local students now advancing to the state level later this year.
The competition, held April 25, brought together 20 students from across the Finger Lakes and western New York, including participants from Seneca County, Rochester, Ithaca and Jamestown.
Felicity Crow of Geneva claimed first place after presenting an idea focused on improving community access to reading and literacy programs. Malaika Bynke of Dundee finished second with a proposal centered on cooking education and food accessibility for families, while Penelope Galens of Penn Yan placed third for an idea aimed at making art supplies more accessible to local families.
All three students attend Moodie’s School in Geneva and will move on to the state competition scheduled for July in Albany. Winners from the state event will have the opportunity to compete at the national level in Washington, D.C., later this year.
The event was hosted at Northeast College of Health Sciences, which also provided lunch for students and families attending the competition. Organizers said the Seneca County Chamber Community Foundation plans to continue hosting the Regional Civics Bee annually.
The Civics Bee is organized through a partnership between the Chamber Foundation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
