New York’s overdue state budget appeared close to a breakthrough before negotiations unraveled again Wednesday, according to Spectrum News 1. Lawmakers and Gov. Kathy Hochul spent another long night at the Capitol trying to salvage a deal more than five weeks past the deadline.
Legislative leaders said they had largely agreed on major policy issues, including housing development, climate law changes, car insurance reforms, and immigration protections. But major disputes over New York City funding, pension reforms, and aid for upstate communities stalled progress again.
Staffers prepared for a possible budget announcement before talks collapsed late in the day. Senate and Assembly Democrats also held closed-door meetings as unresolved fiscal issues continued to frustrate lawmakers and delay final budget bills.
