Josh Doan and Ryan McLeod each recorded a goal and an assist as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 in Game 1 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoff series on Wednesday night at KeyBank Center.
The Sabres controlled the pace early and never trailed despite being outshot 28-16. Jordan Greenway opened the scoring in the second period with a long-range goal before McLeod and Bowen Byram connected on power-play opportunities to help Buffalo build its lead. Doan later added another tally as the Sabres secured their second home playoff win of the postseason and continued a playoff run that has energized the franchise for the first time in 15 years.
Byram’s goal was his fourth of the playoffs, tying Alex Tuch for the team lead this postseason while matching the franchise record for goals by a defenseman in a single playoff run. Zach Benson added two assists and continued his breakout postseason, becoming the fourth Sabres player age 20 or younger to post multiple points in consecutive playoff games.
Alex Lyon made 26 saves and came up with several key stops as Montreal tried to climb back into the game.
Greenway’s goal also matched his offensive output from the regular season, when he scored once in 40 games.
The series continues Friday, May 8, when the Sabres host the Canadiens in Game 2 at KeyBank Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
