Free child development screenings set for May 8 in Newark

Families in Wayne County will have an opportunity this week to check in on their child’s development at a free community event focused on early childhood health.

“Get Ready to Grow,” a program offering developmental screenings for children ages 12 to 60 months, is scheduled for Friday, May 8 at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.

The event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m. in the hospital’s main lobby area. Organizers say the screenings are designed to be quick and engaging, helping families better understand how their child is growing and developing.

The checks are intended to complement routine pediatric visits by identifying potential developmental concerns early and connecting families with local resources. Areas evaluated include speech and language, motor skills, learning, social and emotional development, and overall health indicators like height and weight.

Participants will also have access to guidance from specialists who can help families navigate next steps if additional support is needed.

In addition to screenings, the event will feature kid-friendly activities, including a touch-a-truck experience with local emergency services, free teddy bears, and other family-focused attractions.

Registration is encouraged, though walk-ins will be accepted.
