Mets use four-run sixth to top Rockies in series opener

A four-run sixth inning proved decisive as the New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Monday night at Coors Field. The Mets improved to 13-22, while the Rockies dropped to 14-22.

For five innings, offense was nearly nonexistent on both sides, with the teams combining for just one hit. New York’s pitching staff set the tone early, with Huascar Brazobán and Austin Warren delivering three scoreless innings before David Peterson took over and kept Colorado quiet into the middle frames.

The game flipped quickly in the sixth. Carson Benge sparked the rally with a leadoff home run, and Francisco Alvarez followed with a double off the wall. Luis Torrens kept the momentum going with an opposite-field double, ending a hitless stretch and putting runners in scoring position. With two outs, Mark Vientos came through again, lining a two-run single up the middle to cap the four-run inning and give the Mets a 4-0 lead.

Peterson maintained control into the seventh, striking out the side in the sixth before running into late trouble. A triple by Jordan Beck and a run-scoring single from Kyle Karros trimmed the deficit, but the Mets bullpen closed the door. Craig Kimbrel stranded a runner in the eighth, and Devin Williams worked a perfect ninth to secure the win.
