Oswald Peraza delivered a two-strike, walk-off single in the 10th inning as the New York Mets fell to the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Saturday night at Angel Stadium, a loss shaped by missed chances and an early replay lapse that loomed large late.
New York appeared to limit damage in the opening inning when Austin Slater threw out Jorge Soler at third, but a missed challenge allowed a run to stand, giving Los Angeles an early edge. The Mets answered in the third when Slater doubled and Bo Bichette drove him home with a two-out single.
Nolan McLean settled in after the first but ran into trouble in the fourth, surrendering a two-run single after getting ahead in the count. The rookie finished with six strikeouts over four innings in his shortest outing of the season. Tobias Myers provided stability out of the bullpen, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to keep the Mets within striking distance.
New York capitalized in the seventh. Mark Vientos sparked the rally with a leadoff double, and Andy Ibáñez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in his Mets debut. Tyrone Taylor followed with a game-tying single after Marcus Semien’s aggressive baserunning put him in position.
The game remained tied into extras, where the Mets squandered an opportunity in the 10th. In the bottom half, Austin Warren loaded the bases before nearly escaping, but Peraza lined the decisive hit into left field.
The Mets conclude their series against the Angels on Sunday, with first pitch set for 4:07 p.m. Clay Holmes (3-2, 1.75 ERA) is scheduled to start against Jack Kochanowicz (2-0, 3.09 ERA).
