The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team split a doubleheader with Herkimer College on Thursday in Herkimer, earning a 9-3 win in Game 1 before falling 8-5 in the nightcap. The Lakers used a complete effort in the opener to secure the split on the road.
In Game 1, FLCC controlled the game from the outset behind a strong performance on the mound from Zach Barrett, who tossed seven innings while allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. The Lakers backed him with timely offense, led by Nate Brinza, who went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Ty Joy added two doubles and drove in two runs, while Brennen Russo contributed a home run and scored four times.
Nick Prezioso sparked the lineup with a double, two walks and two stolen bases, while Trevor Pickering and Jimmy Cook each drove in a run to round out the offensive effort.
Game 2 saw the Lakers remain competitive but unable to complete the sweep. Brinza again led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance and three RBIs, while Russo added an RBI and a stolen base. Zach Huber chipped in with a hit and a double, and Alex Green drove in a run, but Herkimer pulled away late to secure the split.
FLCC returns to action Thursday with a doubleheader at SUNY Broome, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
