The New York Mets erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning in an 8-0 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night at Citi Field, improving to 10-19 while Washington fell to 13-17. New York’s offense broke through in a decisive frame and backed a dominant pitching performance to secure the shutout victory.
Bo Bichette set the tone early, launching a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game to give the Mets a quick lead. After being held quiet through the next two innings, New York exploded in the fourth. MJ Melendez sparked the rally with a single before a pair of walks loaded the bases. Marcus Semien’s ground ball plated two runs, and Carson Benge followed with a two-run single. Bichette added a sacrifice fly, and Juan Soto capped the inning with a two-run homer to stretch the lead to 8-0.
Clay Holmes controlled the game on the mound, allowing just three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings while striking out six. He worked through a brief threat in the third and retired the Nationals efficiently before exiting after 94 pitches. The bullpen preserved the shutout, with Tobias Myers tossing two clean innings and Craig Kimbrel striking out the side in the ninth.
The Mets totaled six hits, with Benge leading the way with two, while their patience at the plate helped fuel the big inning.
The Mets continue the series against the Nationals on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. David Peterson is scheduled to start against Cade Cavalli.
