Cornell women’s sailing in contention at National Championship after opening day

The Cornell women’s sailing team opened the ICSA Women’s Team Racing National Championship with a 5-4 record on Sunday at Lake Pontchartrain, sitting eighth in a tightly packed standings at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, just one win out of fourth place entering the final day of competition. The Big Red positioned itself within striking distance of the leaders after a competitive opening slate.

Cornell picked up key victories over MIT, Charleston, Georgetown, Roger Williams and St. Mary’s (Md.), showcasing depth and consistency across its rotation. The trio of Sophia Devling, Gilda Dondona and Winborne Majette, along with crews Sophia Mulvania, Paulina Freyre and Maya Conway, guided the effort on the water. The Big Red narrowly fell to top contenders Stanford and Yale, along with Brown and Dartmouth, in closely contested races that kept them in the middle of a congested leaderboard.

With multiple teams separated by just a handful of wins, Cornell remains in position to climb on the final day. The schedule sets up favorably, with four of its final five races coming against teams currently below the Big Red in the standings, providing an opportunity to move up the leaderboard.

Cornell returns to action Monday at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, for the final day of the ICSA Women’s Team Racing National Championship, as the Big Red looks to push into the top four and contend for a national title.
