Geneva leaders hit pause on hiring and spending after early budget forecasts showed a looming deficit, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
Mayor Jim Cecere and City Council approved interim controls for the 2027 budget, including a hiring freeze for non-essential roles, travel limits, and a review of labor contracts. They also backed suspending their own pay, pending legal review.
Officials say the city faces a projected $1.65 million gap in 2027, growing to nearly $4 million by 2031. Leaders stress the current budget remains stable but say early action now could avoid steep tax hikes later.
