The Finger Lakes Community College Lakers pulled off a signature win on Friday, defeating the College of DuPage Chaparrals 3-1 in an NJCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship semifinal to advance to the program’s first national title match. The victory, played on the national stage, sends FLCC into the championship round after knocking off the tournament’s top seed.
Ithaca soccer standout picks Marist The Lakers leaned on a balanced and efficient attack to control the match, finishing with 54 kills and a .296 hitting percentage. Ethan Bond led the charge with a dominant all-around performance, recording 21 kills while adding 12 digs. Zach Sipos and Jackson Blaszow provided steady support with 13 kills apiece, helping maintain consistent pressure throughout.
FLCC’s offense flowed through setter Cole Thomas, who distributed 48 assists and kept multiple hitters involved. Dominick Alverado added six kills on an efficient night at the net, continuing the team’s strong offensive rhythm. Defensively, the Lakers matched its intensity, totaling 40 digs. Bond again led the effort, while Jack Donovan contributed 10 digs and Sipos added eight. The Lakers also made an impact from the service line, finishing with six aces.
Groton runner heading to Geneseo The Lakers will play for the national championship on Saturday, April 25, with first serve scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
