A new academic journal examining the role and influence of U.S. first ladies is launching this week, with strong ties to Keuka College through both its editorial leadership and design.
The Journal of First Ladies Studies debuts in conjunction with National First Ladies Day on April 25, marking what organizers say is the first publication dedicated solely to scholarship on presidential spouses.
The journal is edited by Dr. Christopher J. Leahy, a professor of political science and history at Keuka College, who helped lead the effort to create a formal outlet for research in the emerging field of first ladies studies.
Leahy said his interest in the topic grew while researching his 2020 book on President John Tyler, which led him to explore the broader historical impact of first ladies — a subject he said has long been overlooked despite its significance.
The inaugural issue includes contributions from multiple scholars, including an article examining Mamie Eisenhower’s interactions with prominent industrialists and another analyzing how her legacy is being reframed in modern historical interpretation.
The project also highlights collaboration with students. The journal’s cover was designed by Keuka College senior Ashly Dumbleton, a Dundee native graduating this spring with degrees in art and design and visual communication design.
Dumbleton worked on the project as part of her Field Period internship, developing multiple design concepts aligned with the journal’s branding before the final version was selected.
College officials say the partnership reflects broader opportunities to connect academic research with hands-on student experience, with discussions already underway about expanding involvement as the journal develops.
The first issue will be available online beginning April 25.
