The Cornell women’s track and field team began competition at the Penn Relays on Thursday with three performances across the hammer throw and 400-meter hurdles, highlighted by a season-best effort on the track.
In the hammer throw, Gabriella Vizcarrondo competed in the college section and finished 21st with a throw of 47.07 meters. Avery Hastings followed in the championship section, delivering one of Cornell’s top marks of the day with a throw of 55.72 meters to place 11th against a competitive field.
On the track, Elise Sawyer turned in an impressive run in the championship section of the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore crossed the line in 59.84 seconds, setting a new season best. The time also stands as the second-fastest performance of her career and currently ranks fifth in the Ivy League this season.
Cornell will look to build on its opening day results as competition continues at the Penn Relays on Friday, with events scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
